North 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway, Deadmans Run projects open house set for April 23

The Railroad Transportation Safety District (RTSD), Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU), and Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (LPSNRD)  invite community members to an open house Thursday, April 23, regarding two projects located in north Lincoln. The North 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway Viaduct Improvement Project and the Deadmans Run Flood Reduction Project will offer the latest updates and construction timelines during the public event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln North Star High School in the commons area, 5801 N. 33rd St.

The North 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway Viaduct Improvement Project will enhance the rail corridor between North 27th and North 48th streets by closing two at-grade railroad crossings at 33rd street and 35th and Adams streets and will construct a new viaduct over the railroad corridor. Once complete, the effort will improve safety by reducing conflicts between trains and other transportation modes, reduce delays at rail crossings, and enhance mobility for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users.

The project combines local, state, federal, and railroad funding, including support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Railroad Transportation Safety District (RTSD), and BNSF Railway.

The Deadmans Run Flood Reduction Project extends from North 48th Street downstream to Cornhusker Highway and will reduce flood risk and improve safety for nearby property owners. The project is expected to remove approximately 480 homes, businesses, and other structures from the Deadmans Run mapped floodplain. Planned improvements include detention basins to hold excess water and channel enhancements to improve flow. Project partners include LTU, the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Residents are invited to attend and share comments or questions. Staff will share design and construction information, answer questions, and receive comments. Personnel from RTSD, LPSNRD, and LTU, along with project consultants, will be available.
