Drought is a natural part of Nebraska’s climate and can affect water availability for communities, agriculture, and natural resources. The following resources explain how drought conditions are monitored and how planning and response efforts help reduce impacts across the Lower Platte River Basin and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District.

The Lower Platte River Drought Contingency Plan outlines how regional partners monitor drought conditions, assess risks to water supplies, and coordinate communication and long-term strategies during drought periods. It explains how drought is identified, what indicators are tracked, and how agencies work together to reduce impacts to communities, agriculture, ecosystems, and public water supplies.

The Lower Platte South NRD Drought Emergency Response Plan focuses on local conditions within the district and describes how drought is defined, monitored, and addressed at the district level, including response actions, coordination with other agencies, and public outreach during drought events.

Also included is an interactive drought monitoring tool that provides up-to-date information on drought conditions across Nebraska. This resource helps users track current conditions and understand how drought status may change over time, supporting informed decision-making for water use and planning.
