Platte River Obstruction Removal
Anyone who enjoys the Platte River will appreciate the Platte River Obstruction Removal Project. The plan includes removing dangerous pilings of miscellaneous materials such as cement, metal, wood, reinforcing bars and other unidentified materials. These obstructions are the result of the removal of road and railroad bridges, which left remnant pilings, supports and other obstructions. These pilings create many potential problems. They can cause disruptions in the flow of the Platte River, and they are especially dangerous to boaters and swimmers that are not aware that they are there. In addition, the pilings catch debris as it floats downstream which could cause flooding.
Twelve sites on the Platte River have been identified as pilings that impede the flow of debris and endanger swimmers and boaters. This multi-year project, which began in 2006, is making the Platte River much safer for those that use it or live around it. Learn more from the Lower Platte River Corridor Alliance, of which the NRD is a member and who is administering the project.
