Education News

Richard Louv, author of "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder," packed the Lied Center for Performing Arts, in Lincoln, where he spoke on February 19th. At left, NRD Environmental Education Specialist McKenzie Barry shares a light moment with Louv earlier in the day. A video of Louv's presentation is available at healthyfamiliesplayoutside.org

GEO-CACHING POPULAR DISTRICT ACTIVITY!

GPS/geo-caching is gaining popularity in Lower Platte South District schools! In the month of May alone, 500 students participated in the GPS/geo-caching activity. This is a great hands-on activity where the students learn the basics about GPS, then get to use hand held receivers to go out and find hidden “caches” on their school ground.

Get Wildlife On-line!

The National Wildlife Federation offers FREE wildlife monthly e-mail newsletters filled with interesting facts and great activities and news about America’s wildlife. Also on their site, you’ll find fun free e-cards to send to friends and family! Check it out at: http://www.nwf.org/kids/

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM GRANTS GIVEN

The following classrooms have received grants from our District:

  • Riley Elementary
  • Elliot Elementary

Outdoor classroom grants encourage the development of outdoor learning areas that promote natural resources conservation and environmental awareness for students of all ages. The grant will fund up to 60% of the proposed project cost, with the NRD share not to exceed $2,000 per request, per fiscal year, (July 1- June 30). The remaining 40% of the project can be covered by in-kind contributions, labor associated with the project or other funding sources.
