Wellhead Willy's Ground Water Games!

Wellhead Willy

“The NRD is all about preserving and protecting our supply of clean drinking water. Below are some ways you can help, then see how much you know about ground water by playing my FREE ground water games!

1. ALWAYS follow label directions when applying fertilizer to your lawn or crop. Applying more than the plants can use will result in nitrates polluting the ground water. Several areas of the District have actually been declared Phase Two Ground Water Management Areas, due to elevated nitrate levels.

2. Dispose of used oil, antifreeze, paints and other household chemicals properly. Do not dump them down the storm drain. Storm sewer drains do not lead to a treatment plant. They empty directly into rivers and streams.

3. Inspect your septic system annually and have the septic tank pumped on a regular basis.

4. Keep your vehicles in good repair. ALWAYS clean-up spilled brake fluid, oil, grease and antifreeze immediately, to keep them from polluting the ground water.

5. Water lawns and gardens in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation.

6. Use drought-tolerant plants in your landscape. These plants need minimal amounts of water to thrive.

7. Properly decommission all unused wells. The NRD has cost-sharing available!

8. Use flow meters on irrigation wells and anhydrous ammonia fertilizer equipment to reduce waste, assure a more even application and to develop a data base for future use. The NRD has cost-sharing available!

9. Fix or replace dripping nozzles and faucets.

10. Chill a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, instead of running tap water until it gets cold.
